I know people on the left hate him now, but Dennis Miller is still funny. Earlier today I heard him hyping a new talk show that I haven't found on the radio yet: Nick DiPaolo and Artie Lange.

Radio is the refuge of failed comedians. Just listen to a great stand up like Louis C.K. smile and bear it through some lame O&A interview.

Steezo is closer with Miller, but he stopped being funny for years before he took the right wing loony turn.

Dane Cook sells out stand up shows. Miller's timing is still impeccable but he ran out of content back when he had the talk show on HBO. Taking oneself too seriously is usually the death knell of a stand up, hell great stand ups like Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and Bill Hicks all lost it once they thought people were coming to them for political deep-thoughts instead of yucks.

I'm not talking about comedians on radio. I'm talking about radio hosts who use comedy. Doing radio is a skill unto itself. That's why Air America failed. The thought was "anybody can do radio" and it's just not true.

They don't have the chops to make it as comedians so they up on morning radio shows with their shitty stingers and fart jokes and names like 'Crash' and 'Ripper.' There's a good morning show here, but it's mostly due to the fact that it's so small, that a lot of the comedy is locally focused and very relatable. They rip on local businesses and the city and all.

Morning Zoo and talk formats are two very different things, although I think we can all agree that morning zoo hosts need to be eradicated in the most painful way possible. Talk format is talk, and the best practitioners of it add some comedy aspects. They may be fools to you, but someone listens to them.
