It was just the other day, here at Castle Loopville, that we were watching this film- shot on location in Haiti where a young woman becomes pregnant and is constantly stalked by a shadowy figure with a mirror for a face. The young lady- a striking mulatto girl with the most piercing eyes, kept jumping from different locations: one minute she was in her home, the next she would be on the beach and other times it what seemed to be a coffee plantation.
Eventually this mirror faced human appears by her bedside where she is asleep and attempts- from what we could discern, to decapitate her- but it turns out her head was no longer attached to her body. It had flown off to see her lover- some distance away (we are shown this in quite graphic detail- though once at her lovers, her head was re-attached to another body).
The figure waits for her behind a cupboard and moments later- we see her head: in what has to be the most fascinating special effects, fly into the room and attach itself to her head.
The figure is so disgruntled by this horror that it goes into a wild and feral tantrum- killing the young girl in the process. The entire film had me reflect a lot on the current political situation in the country- perhaps to, the violent history as well. Oddly enough, the film happens to be Czech.
