7-year-old punished for saying "gay" in school
And he was talking about his mother! But one doesn't do that in Louisiana, apparently. Second grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess to begin last month when another kid asked about his parents. Poor innocent Marcus told the kid that he had two mothers, because his mother is gay. The other kid didn't know what 'gay' meant, so Marcus explained that "Gay is when a girl likes another girl." Unfortunately, a teacher overheard Marcus's cogent explanation and told him in no uncertain terms that 'gay' is a 'bad word.' Then he was sentenced to write "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again" an unspecified number of times. The ACLU is insisting the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff. Said Sharon, "I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had said a word so bad that he didn't want to repeat it over the phone. But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty word." Read the full story on SFGate.com:
