That's funny, because Tony Iommi is the one who said Jimmy Page invented it.

"Communication Breakdown" was the first hardcore song. And any band who can do a 32-minute "Whole Lotta Love," well...

Bonzo was (and a little )

I like Led Zeppelin's rock and roll music. It was often very pretty too, like 'No Quarter' and 'Carouselambra'. I remember one time I saw a second rate Pennebaker sort of c oncert movie with these guys. The best scene was when their manager was screaming at a show promoter for selling posters of the band without cutting him in. The security and forum guy were clearly scared shitless, but the manager waivered between breaking their legs and appealing to their morality by saying stuff like "People exploit Zeppelin for every nickel they can get. It disturbs me."

Led is great even when it sucks (i.e. The Song Remains the Same).

Led Zeppelin have nothing to do with metal. Iommi started it, Tipton furthered it, Hanneman perfected it.

My friend, you post well here @ XPT. But this sentence just don't make a licka sense. Maybe you're a little less elderly than I, I dunno. But in 1976, even the Sabbathians, the Foghat lovers, and the Kiss Army paid some respect to Led Zep. Lookm I'm sorry they wrote "Carouselambra" and "All of My Love" too. But you can't deny much of the rest.

Please don't make me pull out the "Osbournes" card.

Sorry for the hijack, smartt...carry on [/hijack]

Bullshit. Led Zeppelin was a great influence in lots of heavy metal bands, in particular the "melodic metal" ones. When you see John Sykes using a violin arc to play, you know where Jimmy Page has been.

Listening to Sabbath vis a vis LZ is like listening to the Dave Clark 5 vis a vis the Beatles. Sure they're fine, but why not go for the real thing.

Willie D, you are not the first "elder" to tell me otherwise on Zep. I guess I deny it because I didnt grow up on it. Everything I heard from them was on the radio, and we all know how useless radio rock can be. So I dismissed them as having anything to do with influencing metal or heavy music in general. Thats the image I have of them, just a radio rock band. I later found out that they were much "deeper" than that. It's a bitter pill I have trouble swallowing, and should put personal bias aside. For me it was always about all things heavy when it came to music. The dark grooves of Sabbath led me to Master of Puppets, and then it goes haywire from there.

I grew up on Sabbath. I couldnt get into Zep. It just wasnt heavy enough. Zep debuted a yr. earlier than Sabbath ( I maybe wrong). Anyway, its two different styles of music. Its like comparing Ratt to Slayer. Zep is a heavy rock band and Sabbath is a metal band.

Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple: three great rock bands, all three with blues & jazz roots ("Wicked World" is pure jazz), but each one with its own distinctive style.

As opposed to today, when almost every band sound alike.

PERSONALLY, I like Black Sabbath better, but the other two are present on my record collection as well (I have all Led and almost all DP´s, except for the real sucky ones like Masters and Slaves).

The problem is newer bands dont know history. Some new band maybe influenced by Metallica and not know that they were influenced by Diamond Head in the early 80's; who in turn, were influeced by Sabbath. Bands should listen to who influenced their favorite bands and listen to older music, not just metal or rock. Emo, metalcore( wtf is that horrendous screaching shit?) and newer genres are just bastardize versions of existing styles.

There are a few critical differences between BS and LZ that define BS as more "metal" than LZ. Bear in mind that I am a drummer, so I am partial to LZ (Bonham, God of Drummers), but there are differences that make LZ less "metal" than BS.

Page played most riffs as a single note part doubling what the bass did an octave higher, while Tony Iommi played power chords most of time. Power chords sound much heavier and are the foundation of metal.

The riffs LZ plays are more blues based than BS. BS's riffs sound more "evil" because of Iommi's use of minor /diminished scales.

Iommi also had a much more distored guitar tone than Page. After the first LZ album Page gets cleaner and cleaner while Iommi gets more and more metal.

A huge difference is in the production. While LZ was mostly huge drums and bass with trebly guitar riding on top, BS is monster guitars augmented by bass and drums.

While LZ may have laid the groundwork for metal, BS is the first metal band.

You take Thin Lizzy´s "Massacre" and the clothes used by UFO (and some of their musics, sure), and you get the blueprint for Iron Maiden.

I´d just add that, while Jimmy Page was a skilled studio musician who played on almost every album of every genre made in England during the 60´s, Tony Iommi had to develop his own style because he´d lost part of his fingers.

And John Bonham was a highly technical drummer, while Bill Ward, in his own words, "just kinda followed whatever Terry and Tony were doing". And, IMO, it worked fine for the Sabbath sound.

He also used tritones and most importantly, tuned down to C#. Thats the tunning on "Children of The Grave". Its still one of my favorite songs to play on the guitar.

Back in my guitar days, the only stuff tuned that low came from Iommi. However, "Into the Void" is a far more fun riff in C# than the others.

Randy Rhoad's version of "Children of the Grave" on Ozzy's Randy Rhoads tribute album was better than Sabbaths and was only tuned a half-step down.

Also, sorry for my inferior threadjacking skills. I figured Steph inside a whore's ass would do the trick, but I now know better.

I got to disagree. The original is way better. On favorite songs, mine is "Symptom of the Universe."

I like "Hole in the Sky" most among Sabbath tunes, but I'll always have a special place in my blackened conservative heart for "Electric Funeral", since that was the first entire song I learned on the guitar. (Obligatory, once I got my first crybaby wah pedal.)

Among Zep, I like "Achilles' Last Stand" and only really their stuff from Physical Graffiti and later. Their earlier stuff is either played to death on classic rock radio or is so derivative of blues that I find it best to just listen to the source material directly.

You're right about the overplay of earlier Zep on the radio...would a version of WLL from Tokyo in 1972 change your mind? Apparently, Bonham got and wandered offstage for an hour. The whole hilarious episode has been captured on vinyl. TMQ.

But Led Zeppelin started as a blues band! I have tons of bootlegs from their very early years, before the first album, and they´re all blues.

Thats true. Randy was a god(and is responsible for putting Ozzy back on the map). Randy made all of Black Sabbith's stuff sound better.

I love it when drummers go nuts, Willie. For example, the Police's last show at Shea stadium in 1986 involved Sting singing with broken ribs because Stewart Copeland punched him in the stomach moments before the performance. I have no idea if it enhances the music, but what the hell.

Zep was definitely a blues band, Smartt, and they did it well, but I prefer the original stuff to the British imitators - with the exception of Cream's cover songs. Just my personal preference.

Blues-INFLUENCED band. Their roots are on the blues, but that´s just a starting point. I don´t think B.B. King would make songs like "Kashmir", "Rock and Roll" and "Over The Hills and Far Away".

On the other way, I can see B.B. King making "Black Dog" - but not like Led did.
