you will need a video card that has a "video in" slot on it so you can hook up your vcr. Then you will need to capture the whole movie onto your hard drive with a software which will be usually provided with the card.
You will then need to convert the .mpg file to dvd format and burn the files onto a dvd using a dvd burner
long method but less expensive as compared to some of the stuff used by studio guys to convert vhs to dvd

I know Philips make a DVD recorder with a VHS slot for transfers to DVD. This solution would be easier for a less computer savvy person. The only thing I would worry about would be if the tape had some copy protection on it.
its better if you also have a capture card they run around $20. if you have two computers you can use both to get better quality, transfer files from computer 1's hard drive directly to computer 2's dvd burner. something like that, look it up on google

Aww come on, he didn't say that he wasn't buying new ones, just that he wants to digitise the VHS tapes he has already! I do the same thing and it works perfectly for me. But I agree, I am against illegal copying and selling of DVD's.
