What is going on with Anabolic? - 07/10/04 11:35 AM

Anabolic used to be pretty much the only porn I would buy. Now they have a crop of whole new directors including Alexis Amore !!

Is directing that easy that Jessica Dee and Alexis Amore could do it. get signed to a directing deal when they self admittedly don't know much about directing.

Has anyone else noticed that Anabolic films aren't what they used to be. Nasty Nyphmos, Up Your Ass and Gangbang Girl used to be solid safe bet porn. No more kinky ways for girls to drink cum after a gangbang. They don't even take in the mouth like they use too.

Where did the directors that defined Anabolic go? Why did they go? I believe that owning your own titles really couldn't the reason so many left.

You guys all know me as the Porn Nostradamus.
Here is what I see in the Anabolic Crystal Ball:
They have brand name recognition built from ten years slowly deteriorate. They have not kept up with the competition like Evil Angel, Red Light, and Zero Tolerance. I understand their philosophy, pay any monkey willing to work for a cookie crumb be a director. But I know in the end the consumer will start to catch on and know a once prestigious company is now tarnished and washed up. What is see is the owner of Anabolic/Diabolic is too busy enjoying their Ferraris and Benzes and forgot what got them to the top. Plus I think they play golf too much to really know who is a good director out there are. They just look in their warehouse or hire rejects who get fired somewhere else to be their directors. Here is their current director line up:
Sal -FIRED from Red Light use to be a towelboy to Vince.
Robbie - FIRED from Red Light - very mechanical, uses picture charts to show performers what position he wants.
Chico - former webmaster - shows some promise and improving on their dime. I think he will get all the practice time he needs and move on to a better company.
Su- Owner's wife, nuff said.
Alexis Amore - Huhh???
Compare that to the roster of directors from Evil Angel and Red Light - They have no match.
Look at Evil Angel's latest signee:
Jonni Darkko - hottest director from New Sensations - truly love his work and it shows.
Justin Slayer - ok director, but one of the hottest male talent right now.
Sometimes honesty hurts.

Jonni Darkko... shows that he loves his work? Hmmm... from my personal experience on a New Sensation shoot, he was nothing but frustrated with everyone. Lucky be got to be the last person he shot that day and thankfully cuz im easy to work with, he didn't snap at me but he snapped at a few other surrounding people.

Not a pleasure to work for. The dog there that I guess belonged to the owner was the cutest thing ever saying hi to everyone. Jonni yelled "someone get this fucking dog before I kill it"

I was very close to giving him my two cents. That really put me out of my mood but then again I didn't want him to get a premadonna impression out of me either.

That's my experience with Dark Head.

Another example of what's wrong at Anabolic:

In this SNEAK PEEK OF UPCOMING ANABOLIC RELEASES half of their listed upcoming releases are comps, not new or even recent footage.

I realize there's money in releasing comps. And, making half of your release comps may make sense (Vivid releases like 99% comps these days). But when your new production efforts are so feeble that half of your showcase main releases are comps of stars who have long since departed you have a serious problem.

My local porn store has been racking Anabolic on the lower (grade B) racks for a year, and only stocks about half of their new releases.

PS. Note that one release has the wrong caption - wrong title! And all have already been released - not one is in fact "upcoming"

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago, Anabolic was the only company I'd even consider browsing. Nowadays, it'll be third or fourth. Nevertheless, they have an enoumous back catalog and can probably last for a while....a while anyway.

I too remember when that was the only porn I would browse but not anymore.

They seems to be banking a lot on that ARTCORE but I am reluctant to even try it out after being burned on some others.

How is that ARTCORE? Has anyone on this board bothered to check it out?

I've always been a fan of Tom Byron's work, from Elegant to Extreme to his new company, so I may be a bit partial, but for my money Evolution puts out the most consistently strokeable porn out there. I haven't been disappointed yet, and I've watched almost all their stuff.

Evil usually hits the mark, particular Jules' stuff. This may be sacrilege to some, but I'm not really into Buttman. I hate his whiny voice. And Randy West is just dead fucking weight over there.

The rest of it - Anabolic, Zero, RLD, PXP etc. etc. etc.... It's all indistinguishable from the next. If there's a girl I want to see, I'll pick up something, but otherwise...

Nice come back! We will see. I believe Zero Tolerance is a well run company. You dont like their box cover, I think they are great. But who knows we will see .

Anabolics product isnt what it use to be but bad Anabolic movies are much better then anything Zero Tolerance ever put out .In my book Zero Tolerance rates as one one the worst porn companies .

One thing about Zero Tolerence that I can't stand is the clunkyness of thier DVD menus. If you have actually "arrived" I would imagine that you would have your DVD's set up professionally not like something someones nephew turned out.

Suckabolic reminds me of the Chicago Bulls when they broke up Jordan, Pippen, and Phil Jackson to save money. Now the Chicago Bulls suck and cant get any good players to sign with them. What they save in payroll does not compensate their lost revenue and market share. I believe they just got lucky in the beginning when the gonzo market was small and they had a great group of talent. Now the gonzo market is overcrowded and they are not even competitive. You know survival of the fittest and the dinosaurs like Anabolic will die off.

They may look like "great business men" but are they still great pornographers today? Put another way, would you hire any of their current directors to produce JM product? I think not.

Anabolic is doing a great job of milking their “brand equity” and catalog for a current profit at no significant investment. That can be a good business plan but it is also a terminal plan. It’s pretty obvious they’re making almost no investment for the future: in a few years there will be no consumers left who thinks Anabolic is in any way associated with good porn and their catalog will contain nothing recent anyone will buy.

I’ve been involved in running a small business before and I’m not impressed with Anabolic right now unless they plan to close in a few years. Their current investment in new product is less than required to maintain their current profit over the long term.

I agree with Jeff... and many inside the business who understand BUSINESS think anabolic will survive much longer than than many of the newer companies based upon BUSINESS. As a fan, I think they have not done so well lately (and I have even tried to see if they were interested in infusing my blood into their production team). From a BUSINESS perspective, many insiders think their model will lead to long term profitability and success.

Remember, Enron looked good for awhile, now see them. GM was going broke until Iacocca. Now look at THEM.

i thought it was chrysler, but i can't argue with their business model. they've made enough not to care about 30 years from now--while everyone else overhead, publicity, and is bent on tying up meat puppets to contracts---they're spending pocket change and cashing checks. the checks might not be what they used to be, but they're headache and operational-cost free.

I never said Anabolic was going out of business. They made enough money during their glory years to last another 20 years. They are just not as competitive or have the passion to be the best anymore. They are happy making money out of comps and cheap directors. What I mean is their sales is slowly eroding.
